This Italian parsley plant survived the winter of 2016. This plant is an annual that is supposed to die when the gardening season ends. During the winter we had temperatures that dipped into the teens, snow covered this delicate plant for a day or so but still, it survived. How on earth did that happen? One possibility is the fact that it is located in a large pot just 18 inches from the east side of our house, the side that gets all warmed up by the sun for hours in the morning. The side is stucco over insulation, so it’s possible that just enough warmth was stored in the wall and released during the night to keep the plant from freezing. That’s all I can figure out. It will be interesting to see if this plant grows enough to harvest it for cooking over the upcoming season.
