You have probably guessed that I’m a voracious reader, and that’s because I can’t write stuff all day long. And I don’t watch TV except for sports and local TV news shows, and very few movies are worth seeing. So books are my main source of entertainment. Here are three books I’ve read in the past two weeks that I really enjoyed.

This is Nicholas Petrie’s first novel, a thriller, and it is superb. It should win the Edgar Award for best first novel. It grabs you by the throat and never lets go. This story of a traumatized veteran, a gigantic out-of-control dog, and a believable bombing plot will keep your interest and make you very jumpy. I couldn’t put it down, but Mary Jane had to put it down on occasion because it was so intense. Can’t wait for his second thriller.

Here a book for people who liked The Lost City of Z and other books about the early exploration of Central and South America. It tells the tale of Lloyd Stephens, the writer, and Frederick Catherwood, the illustrator, and their explorations of the hidden Maya cities of Palenque,, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Tulumm, and others. Since I have visited three Maya sites, this book captivated me. Stephens went on the assist in the building of the Panama Canal, and Catherwood’s books were huge bestsellers. Simply excellent, for me anyway.

John Sanford is one of my favorite crime writers and his books fall into the categories of both police procedurals and thrillers. He never disappoints. In this book, Lucas Davenport no longer works for Minnesota’s BCA, but rather assisting the former governor in his race for vice president as his potential running mate for president is being threatened. A quick but very good read!
