For me, birding is fun any time of the year. But because of migrations winter is the best time to appreciate the spectacles of birds in gigantic flocks. Take a look at the scenes that I see on a daily basis at this time of the year.
- Because of its agricultural fields, the South Valley of Albuquerque is a bird magnet. Sandhill Cranes like these love alfalfa.
- Canada geese travel in flocks that can number in the thousands. It’s not uncommon for me to see five hundred or more geese in the fields of Anderson Farms.
- This gigantic swarm of European starlings can turn together as if under divine control. They resemble large schools of fish, which can turn in the same manner.
- Here is a closeup of the same swarm.
