Dragonflies: Beauty on Wings

Dragonfly Larva

This is the perfect time for dragonflies and the South Vally has plenty of them because we have plenty of water in the river, the ditches, and the drains. All dragonflies are harmless. Despite names like “darner” and “hawk,” they don’t have stingers and the only things they bite are flies, mosquitos, and other insects. Their legs form a miniature basket that they catch their prey in and they eat their catch on the fly. Dragonfly larvae eat mosquito larvae, too, and like caterpillars, they are not as attractive as they are in their adult form. Above top is the Widow Skimmer.
